Midyear Goals Check-in, aka COVID-19 Ruining My Plans

Honestly, is it really a Caitlin post if it’s not late?

I know it’s not the middle of the year anymore, but I had a bunch of middle of the year posts to publish before this one, so here we are. I made some resolutions in the beginning of the year, and it’s time to check in on how I’m doing with them! I’ve forgotten about some of these, and I know I completely failed others, so this should be fun…

1) Start a brand new blog series

Yessss. The new blog series I was referring to was Caitlin Reads, and I’m so happy with the response it’s gotten!! It was supposed to be a monthly feature, but I think I’m switching to every two or three months because it’s hard for me to stick to a TBR lmao.

I know this series has areas it could improve on, but I’m so glad you guys are enjoying it! I’m always open to feedback!

2) Have a more healthy relationship with stats

I feel like I have had a more healthy relationship with stats this year, but only because they’ve improved? Don’t get me wrong, I’m immensely grateful, but I want to be happy with my numbers no matter what, or better yet—not care about them at all.

3) Reach 1,000 followers?

As I’m writing this post, I have over 740, and I’m so grateful. 😭❀ I don’t think I’m on track to reach a thousand by the end of the year, but we can hope!

4) Schedule a sh*t-ton of posts

I don’t think I need to schedule that many posts anymore, because 1) my summer break got extended, and 2) online school will probably take up less time (based on the schedule my school gave). I’m 99% sure I’ll regret not pre-scheduling many posts by the time school starts though. But I suck at writing posts in advance and I don’t have the time to. 😭

5) Reply to comments within four days

Yeah, definitely didn’t do this. I knew I was unlikely to anyway. Β―\_(ツ)_/Β― But I did stick to this goal for brief periods of time, I’ll give myself that.

6) Write one discussion a month

I’m meeting this goal if I consider creative posts, book tags, and lists discussions. But I need to get better at writing discussions discussions, like my what I look for in a book and blog hopping discussions.

7) Do not say β€œRTC”

Lmaoooo this was supposed to be an easy AF goal, but guess who still failed it. πŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆ

1) Read 100 books

I’ve been ahead of schedule on my Goodreads challenge since the beginning of the year, and I’m pretty sure that I can complete it by the end of 2020. 100 will be the most books I read in a single year ever.

2) Year of the Asian

I’m aiming for the Malayan Tapir, which is 21-30 books by Asian authors, and I’m very ahead of schedule! I think I’ve finished 15 so far, and I’m currently reading two. (Dare I say my reading taste deserves rights? Asian books are the best.)

Also, you’re supposed to write a blog post to sign up for YARC, and I haven’t written one yet. πŸ‘πŸ‘ƒπŸ»πŸ‘ I don’t even know if I’m still going to. Maybe my wrap-up when I complete the challenge can also function as my sign-up post lmao.

3) Read 50 backlist titles in the first half of 2020

Lol, no. I was doing so well in the first four months of 2020, but in May and June I decided to bleep it and read all the 2020 releases I wanted to. πŸ™ˆ I was so close though! I’m pretty sure I read over 40!

4) Complete my 2020 TBR

My 2020 TBR consists of the books I mentioned in the I Should Read That book tag and my 5-star predictions TBR. I’m so close to finishing the latter—I only have The Starless Sea left to read! As for the former, I’ve only read two out of seven. πŸ˜” Technically five, because Cassie Clare and Jay Kristoff have done problematic stuff, and I’ve decided I no longer want to support them.

5) Reread Books

I reread the first two HP books this year, but because of JKR’s messiness, I’m completely cutting ties with that series. πŸ™ƒ I still need to reread Ari and Dante though. And I’m resisting the urge to reread Six of Crows. πŸ₯Ί

I wanted to reread PJO this year too, but I think I’ll do so closer to the release of its adaptation!

6) Read classics

Ah, I’m so sad. I haven’t so much as touched Pride and Prejudice and The Picture of Dorian Gray. The most I did was read a hundred pages of Anne of Green Gables, and if all goes to plan I’ll finally finish it this month.

(The coronavirus ruined this entire section lmao.)

1) Get kick-ass grades

This goal was referring to school year 2020-2021, but because of corona I still haven’t started it. Not complaining though.

2) Make more friends?

See what I said above.

3) Get better at ping pong

I was supposed to practice this summer, but you already know why I couldn’t. Also, I don’t think I’m gonna be able to compete in any competitions this year because of the pandemic. πŸ˜”

As I expected, I’m not doing well at all. :”) But maybe I’ll somehow complete most of these by the end of the year who knows.

How are you doing on your 2020 goals? Have you set your Goodreads Challenge? How are you doing on it so far?

  1. Lmaooo the coronavirus ruined all of my life goals this year too my new goals is to get out of bed once in a while. Other than that it looks like your goals are well! 3. YAY for all the goals! You’re doing so well eeeppp. Also please stop me from rereading SoC and PJO too, dem tv adaptations are TESTING me tbh lmao. Also wow I love your ping pong goal, ADORABLE.

LOVE you Caitlin Reads series SO GO YOU.

I am… on track with my reading goals BUT not so well with actual reading in 2020. The year started off rough and busy and I’ve also just been rereading a lot and not finding new faves. We hate it here but its fine.

  4. i also need to read the picture of dorian grey this year too! my reading challenge is 50 books and i’m 12 books ahead of schedule! which doesn’t seem like a lot looking at your 100 books goal!! go you!! and i really really hope you reach 1000 this year you deserve all the followers ❀

  5. Lol the coronavirus practically ruining all of our life plans but give support to our reading goals πŸ˜‚ I’m supposed to read less this year but ended up reading more. I’ve been getting worse at writing reviews on Goodreads this year- I reviewed a lot on my blog but I always write RTC on goodreads and promptly forgets about it πŸ™ˆ

    1. lmao, true. though to be honest i don’t think i’m reading as much as i could because i’m also procrastinating, writing, and blogging in quarantine πŸ˜… that’s still amazing though!! at least you frequently write reviews. i almost never do anymore lmao πŸ™ƒ

  6. Ahh, I’m so sorry about coronavirus ruining all your life goals- but 100% relate.😭 But you’re still doing amazing with your blogging and reading goals, and I hope the second half of 2020 looks up for you!! xx (And for the world in general, lol.)

I’ve really been loving your Caitlin Reads series and I’m so happy you started it! I definitely relate to not scheduling posts. I always say I’ll do it, but for some reason I find it so hard? I guess I find some sort of adrenaline from planning and drafting and finalizing posts all the night before I’m supposed to post them, HAHA. Oh my gosh you’re killing your Goodreads challenge, yay!! A reading queen. I want to reread SoC and PJO too, but there’s so little time and so much to read, I feel like I’ll never get to around to it in 2020.

    Wonderful post as always!!πŸ’—

    1. thank you so much olivia πŸ˜πŸ’– hahaha, same. 2020 needs to do a 180 OMG.

SAME! that’s how i feel about scheduling posts!! i just find it more fun when i post them last minute LMAO. and i’m a ~mood drafter~, meaning i have to be in the mood to draft certain posts. so i can’t just draft anything at any time (i’m weird, haha). No, i’m really not :(( I’m just reading more due to quarantine, but thank you ❀ haha, that's exactly how i feel. i really want to reread books, but whenever i seriously think about doing so, i always remember that there are so many unread books that i need to get to πŸ₯Ί

  7. Congrats on almost finishing your 2020 reading goals! That’s such a big achievement, girl! *high fives* 2020 has been insane and not at ALL what I expected it to be, but I’m so proud of everyone for getting through it together 🀍 Here’s to a great rest of the year!

    1. ahh, thank you Charis πŸ₯ΊπŸ’– *high fives you back*

that’s such a great way of thinking about it! it’s been a horrible year, but at least we’re getting through it ❀ i still hope everything improves though :((

  8. It seems like you’re tracking pretty well considering COVID19 pulled the breaks on 2020! Actually, I was supposed to be crushing a back list this year [which I’ve been gradually working through] but 2020 has me re-reading a whole bunch of old favorites??? I’m like, did we /really/ need to read Twilight again? Probably not but it was pretty fun! I’m trying to topple some books off my back list this month!

Lol – I was supposed to read six classics too… Better get a move on! πŸ’™

  9. Congrats on doing so well with so many of your goals! I’m sorry that so many of them have been impacted by covid, though 😞 I’m impressed that you got so close to your goal of reading 50 backlist books! And good luck with hitting 1k followers – I believe in you!! Wow, calling me out though with that “do not say RTC” goal lol πŸ˜… it’s just not realistic, I’m afraid

  10. Hello,

These were just the right guidelines I have been seeking for this issue. I’m glad I came across your blog article. I can’t thank you enough for writing such a helpful post.

I am so happy to connect with you. I have followed your blog, and I must say you are doing a fantastic job.

  11. Honestly, Caitlin I’m so impressed with how you’re doing on all your goals! When we made our goals post in the beginning of the year (which we put up at the end of January, so you are not alone in your late posting) I deliberately made all my goals vague and with loopholes so that I could easily achieve them. I looked back at that post recently and it’s not even worth doing a check in because I made it impossible to fail at, so it would be a very boring post. It would just be me saying, “I should be failing at this goal, but since I said xyz in case I failed, I’m doing fine”. So I’ll save that for the end of the year so that I appear accomplished, and not like a fool.

I happen to think you’re absolutely killing it blogging wise! As someone who loves reading your posts, I think that you should ignore all the goals you set and just take my word for it when I say your blog and all the content you put out is absolutely fantastic! And I really do hope that you reach 1,000 followers by the end of the year because you deserve all the love and appreciation!

Also, this year Chana and I decided not to schedule posts in advance, and I know this is the opposite of what everyone says, but it’s reduced our stress about blogging so much! Knowing that we can post on a whim, or don’t have to post at all, or can push off a post to a day that we’re less busy has been really helpful! But somehow the fall semester always ends up keeping us super busy, so in a few months I’ll probably regret not having a whole bunch of posts all written and ready to go!

As for your reading goals, I am in awe! I said that I want to read 50 books minimum, but ideally want to read 100 books. right now I’ve read 43 books, so I’m on track (and ahead) to read 50 books, but not at all on track for 100 books. And the fact that you’ve already completed most of your books from your 5 Star Predictions post is amazing! I can’t wait to see the follow up post and hear all your thoughts!

And I feel as life goals don’t really count. When everyone was making their goals posts they were assuming a normal year without a pandemic, so even if you don’t achieve any of those goals, managing in your new reality is succeeding!

    1. haha, that’s actually a good plan. I’m so excited to read you guys’ wrap-up at the end of the year πŸ₯ΊπŸ₯Ί and thank you so much Malka πŸ˜πŸ’–πŸ’– i’m so glad you like my content! I feel like I’m slowly becoming more content with it! It’d be nice to hit 1k before the end of the year, but i think i’d be fine if i didn’t hit it.

no i actually get what you mean! scheduling posts is really not for me lmao. i hate forcing myself to draft something when i don’t want to. last minute posting isn’t the most organized way of doing things, but it does make me more happy πŸ˜…

ah, that’s such a great way of looking at things! you’re right!! i hope the year improved though πŸ₯Ί

  12. My goals definitely got affected this year as well because of covid-19. My main fun goals were to go out with friends more, go on more solo day trips and see more musicals. But obviously that didn’t happen!!
You’re doing so well with your goals though so well done! 740 followers and 58 books is amazing!! Reaching my Goodreads challenge is the one goal I’ve actually completed this year oops, and that’s because I set it at a number I knew I’d easily reachπŸ˜‚ I set it for 25 books but I’ve read 29 so far.
Good luck with achieving the rest of your goals Caitlin!πŸ’—

  13. Hi Caitlin! 2020 is a funky year isn’t it? Pretty much nothing happened as planned! I’m glad to hear that you are ahead of your Goodreads goal and the Year of the Asian Challenge. It’s one of my goals this year to reply to comments faster too πŸ™‚

  14. i think you’re doing pretty good, actually, caitlin! give yourself more credit. like 58 books in 6 months is already amazing, and you’re also pretty close to your YARC goal, so yay!

i’d also say 40 backlist titles is pretty good! i also wanted to prioritize more backlist than new releases and i think i was successful until may, because then so many books i wanted to read were being released that i just had to give in, hahah. but i am still determined to tackle all the books in my TBR that were released before 2018 this year. hopefully, we’ll both make it!

wishing you all the luck on your classics reads & your goals for the rest of the year!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. ah, thank you!! πŸ₯ΊπŸ’– lol, relatable. all my self-restraint left me in may. but honestly, that 40 backlist books thing isn’t as good as it looks. even though i read books that were published before 2019, a good chunk of them were books that i added to my TBR just recently, not ones that i’ve been meaning to read forever :”)

      same to you, lais! ❀

  15. It looks like you did great with most of your goals this year! ❀ Though I feel you about those Life Goals, I was supposed to go on this really cool vacation, but then it got canceled and the future of my Master Course is still unknown 😱

Quarantine honestly had me reading so many books – it’s how I coped with everything going on, so now I’m already done with my challenge πŸ“š However, I did fail at reading my physical TBR, I was determined to finally get to all the books on my shelf back in April and since then … I have read 2 πŸ˜…

    Liked by 1 person

    1. thank you! i hope things still work out for your master’s course! and, ahh, that sucks :((

lmao i can relate—i haven’t finished the books on my physical tbr yet, even though there are only a little more than 10 left 😭 but that’s great though! i’m so happy that you were able to find comfort in reading during these trying times ❀ ❀ congrats on finishing your challenge πŸ₯Ί

  16. I’m like eleven books behind on my Goodreads challenge so it’s not going great lmao but we’ll get there (I hope), I will try and do a ton of reading in December because it’s my extended break between high school and uni so like one of the rare occasions I’ll have zero obligations (though knowing me I’ll find something whoops). Covid-19 ruined all my plans and because of it a lot of my goals are no longer feasible and I am even more uncertain about 2021 because my options have become quite limited, but hopefully things improve in the next few months and we’ll see what happens.

    1. lmao i always find something to help me procrastinate, so i can relate. but you got this!! december/christmas break is also the time i do the most reading lmao.

ah, i’m so sorry :(( i can really relate to that though. hopefully things still somehow work out for the both of us!

  17. i love the caitlin reads series so, so much, and i’m so happy that you were able to start it!! also i feel you on writing posts in advance 😭😭 (but hopefully i’ll have more time on my hands due to online school? still, i feel like i should be better prepared lmao) omg 58 books is amazing, caitlin, you’ve totally got this!! i’m ahead of my gr challenge too, thankfully, and i’m hoping to read a lot more in the next few weeks before school starts.

i caved too though because the 2020 releases all look so good ugh πŸ˜… but 40 backlist titles is so good!! and rip all of our live goals because of corona 😒 but you should give yourself more credit, you’re doing amazing with all of your goals πŸ’–πŸ’–

(ignore how this comment is all over the place haha)

    1. thank you so much!! ❀ i'm so glad you like it! πŸ₯Ί i'm hoping that online school will give me more free time, but who i'm kidding i'll probably regret not scheduling any posts once it starts lmao.

thank you!! (i've fallen a little behind on it tho πŸ™ƒ it's fine, i'm still ahead of schedule) that's amazing ❀ good luck with reading before school starts!!

ah, you're the best 😭 thanks so much! i think i'm starting to read backlist books again, but i still get really distracted by new releases :")

      it's not! i loved reading it ❀

  18. Ahh best of luck for all of your goals for the rest of the year, you can do it all! I’m so proud of everything you’ve accomplished and love your blog series so much as well. ❀
I also want to give more backlist books some love, but it's soooooooo hard not to get tempted by new releases aaaaaah we need to keep each other accountable! ❀

  19. I only set my Goodreads goal for 15 books because I’m not confident yet to set them higher. The Picture of Dorian Gray! I have a copy of that book but I still haven’t read it yet. I’ll try my best to get to that one before 2020 ends.

Life-wise, it’s kinda okay? I mean I was supposed to be looking for mew job but then the pandemic happens and lots of people lost their jobs so yeah. That’s gonna be tough.

I hope you’ll get to reach 1k followers!!

  20. You’re doing so well!!
