Seven Books that I Desperately Need to Read in 2020

Don’t mind me, just crying about the state of my never-ending TBR instead of actually reading.

As the new year dawns on us, I truly do hope to make a sizable dent in my to-be-read pile. I know that almost everyone says that at the beginning of the year, only to add even more books to their TBR, but in 2020, I’m trying to be serious about cutting my TBR down. And to hold myself accountable, I’m gonna be mentioning seven books that I absolutely, absolutely have to read in 2020. If I don’t get to them next year, feel free to punch me through your screen.

I’ll also be using the prompts of the I Should Read That book tag to help me decide which books to put in this ultimate 2020 TBR. Thank you so much to Olivia @ Purely Olivia and Emme @ A Literary Latte for tagging me! Olivia and Emme are some of my all time favorite book bloggers, and you should really give them some love. 💚

A book that a certain friend is always telling you to read

I’ve recently discovered Ruby @ Ruby Rae Reads, and since then I’ve fallen in love with her amazing personality. Her comments never fail to make me smile. Since she loves The Boy Who Steals Houses a lot, she mentions it in almost all of her posts, and every time, I comment saying that TBWSH is on my TBR. I’ve heard amazing things about it. Plus, its author is Cait from Paper Fury, one of the most iconic people in the book community—I desperately want to support her and her book!

A book that’s been on your TBR forever and yet you still haven’t read it

You mean…. every book on my TBR? If you scroll down to the very bottom of my ebook library, which contains the majority of my TBR, you’ll find that the very first book I ever downloaded is The Shadow of the Wind. Apparently it’s a literary masterpiece, and I’m excited to finally read it and see for myself if it really is.

A book in a series you’ve started, but haven’t gotten around to finishing

26856502. sy475

I do have valid reasons for not picking Vengeful up yet. First, I’ve been disappointed by a V.E. Schwab sequel in the past. Our Dark Duet? We don’t know her. Second, I’m extremely satisfied with the way Vicious ended already. And third, there may be a third book in this series, and I don’t want to read Vengeful early, only to forget everything that happened in it if/when the third book comes out. That being said, I absolutely adore Vicious and V.E. Schwab’s writing, and I hope to read Vengeful sooner rather than later! I’ve heard great things about it as well!

A classic you’ve always liked the sound of, but have never actually read

There is no better answer to this prompt than The Picture of Dorian Gray. I am so excited to read it because people I trust (even the ones that don’t normally read/enjoy classics) absolutely love it. Plus, its premise sounds amazing.

A popular book that it seems everyone but you has read

Without a doubt, the answer to this is The Dark Artifices series by Cassandra Clare, most notably its first book, Lady Midnight. The Shadowhunter Chronicles is probably one of the top five most talked about books in the book community, and I always feel a little left out whenever people have discussions about it online.

an accurate representation of me whenever people talk about TSC

I’ve read the first four books in The Mortal Instruments and the entire The Infernal Devices trilogy, but I don’t remember anything about them because I read them years ago. One of my biggest 2020 goals is to restart the entire Shadowhunter Chronicles by rereading City of Bones, and then read the rest of the books in publication order until I’m finally caught up with TSC. I’m even gonna read the numerous novellas that Cassie Clare has written, I can’t wait.

A book that inspired a film/TV adaptation that you really love, but just haven’t picked up yet

Okay, I haven’t seen Anne With An E YET. But with the show’s cancellation (RIP)—or maybe the premiere of its finale?—my Twitter feed received an influx of Anne With An E-related tweets, photos, and videos. The actor who plays Gilbert is SO CUTE, I cannot. Seeing those made me super excited to watch the show, and also to finally read the book it’s based on.

A book you see all over Instagram but haven’t picked up yet

Sadly, I don’t have Bookstagram, so I answered this prompt with a popular book that also has a beautiful cover instead!

All editions of Nevernight are absolutely breathtaking. If I had a copy and a Bookstagram account, I’d be taking pictures of it non-stop. I’ve also heard the most incredible things about Nevernight! Granted, I’ve heard negative things as well, but I feel like those who love the Nevernight Chronicles die-hard love it, and I’m excited to see where I fall on the spectrum.

I like to think that I’m good at sticking to deadlines, so I better read all of these books by the end of next year. A part of my soul will die if I don’t.

I tag Charlotte, Marie, Ngoc, Sofii, Tiffany, and Saoudia!

do you cry once a week about the state of your tbr like i do? what books do you absolutely have to read already? have you read any of the books i mentioned here?

  1. OMG, you don’t know how perfect this is, this is the kind of tag I needed in my life right now! I love you for tagging me, you’re the best❤️ ❤️
Same about The Dark Artifices series, I feel that everyone has read it except me, but I feel that I’d love to re-read ALL the books first because it has been a while since I’ve read them and I ‘ve probably forgotten many important things … so, SOMEDAY! 😅
I hope you’re having the most INCREDIBLE month, love 🥰

    1. Ahhhh 😭 Sofi, you’re SO sweet 💗💗💗💗💗💗 I’m excited to see your answers if you get around to it!
Ah, don’t worry–I haven’t read it as well. Let’s be oblivious to the references together :”) I would love to reread ALL of the books first for the maximum experience. The world of the Shadowhunters is so vast, and I really want to go into every book with the ability to get every Easter egg!
I hope you’re also having an incredible month ❤

  2. Ah.. I read The Boy who Steals Houses and it was a really cute, emotional read!! I hope you enjoy it!! I do need to read Cait’s first book though!
I need to read Vengeful too but I didn’t know that might be a third one!! That’s interesting and I really hope the title begins with V again!!
Yes The Picture of Dorian Grey is a classic I want to read as well!! I hope we both enjoy it!!
Best of luck with reading all Cassandra Clare’s shadowhunter books as there is a lot but I hope you love them.
I also need to read Nevernight as well and the covers are very beautiful!! I’m excited to read more adult fantasies in general!!
Great post and I hope you get to read them all soon!! ❤

    1. I hope I can get to it really soon! And I also haven’t read ATPN yet! I’ll probably read it after I read TBWSH
Yeah, V.E. Schwab has hinted at it! Though I remember her saying that it probably won’t be coming for a long time :(( I’m excited for more Victor content though. Haha, I’d be so disappointed if the titles stopped beginning with V, because c’mon, those are the books’ trademarks!!
Yes, there is SO MUCH. but i hope to get to all of them next year, probably during summer when I have the most time.
Same! I’m really excited to read more adult fantasies ❤ I feel like there are a lot of hyped books in the genre that I will absolutely LOVE
      Thank you, Sophie!!!

  3. I have TBWSH on my TBR as well, and I haven’t gotten around to getting/reading it yet. That’s definitely a book I want to read in 2020 as well. I don’t even remember how Vicious ended, but yeah, I think Schwab tends to write her books without serious cliffhangers, so they pretty much stand on their own. At least, she’s done that with A Darker Shade of Magic, and Vengeful has a pretty completed ending except for one part. But I do hope you love Vengeful if you read it!! Also, Anne is amazing, hilarious, and I really hope you love the book! At times, it’s a little slow because it’s a classic, but I loved reading it when I was younger, and I think I read all of the books except, Rainbow Valley, and Anne of Avonlea (I was too impatient and skipped to the next book lol).
Happy reading, and good luck with all your goals for 2020 💕

    1. I hope we can both read the enjoy TBWSH soon! Ah, the ending of Vicious was perfect, at least for me, haha. I loved how Eli was ultimately “defeated,” and ending was the perfect combination of happy/sad and complete/there’s room to explore. I’ll most definitely be reading Vengeful, bc I need to know how Victor, Mitch, and Sydney’s stories continue though ❤
I don't know if you know this, but she's writing a spin-off to the Shades of Magic series! It's called Threads of Power!
I'm so excited to read Anne of Green Gables! Haha, whenever I mention it in a post, people immediately tell me to read it. I am a little hesitant to read it because I'm not a big fan of classics, but I think it's one of those classics that I'll actually enjoy. Oh, I've heard of the sequels. apparently the author was forced to write them, haha! Honestly, I probably won't read the sequels because I haven't heard a lot about them, and since the author was forced to write them, I want to respect her wishes and only read Anne of Green Gables ❤ Plus, there are SO many sequels, haha
Happy reading and good luck with your 2020 goals as well!!

  4. CAITLINNNNNN!!!! AH!!! Did you know that YOU are the actual best??!! Well, you do now! I need to do a post like this too because there are SO many books that I simply MUST get to asap.

Also yes you REALLY do need to read TBWSH. I’m glad I could your (silent hehe) reminder *wink wink*

And then also I had to read Dorian for school this year, it really is a great classic. I much more prefer children’s classics though. Anne is SO high up on my list. I ADORE the show so so so much and I’ve never read Anne from cover to cover. Also still need to get to Nevernight.

YES I DO CRY ABOUT MY TBR!! hourly tbh

    Liked by 1 person

    1. NO, YOUUUU 😭😭😭😭💖 and if you do something like this, I can’t wait to read it!

yes, you are my silent reminder hehe. u are legally obligated to punch me if I don’t get to TBWSH next year.

I’m so glad that you enjoyed Dorian! And I get why you would, bc I feel like they’re more accessible? But hey, I don’t read classics, period, so who am I to talk? UGHHH, i want to read Anne and its TV adaptation SO BAD.

  5. I have not read any of these books, yet! But after seeing all the love for Anne with an E after the cancellation of the series, I cannot lie, I’m super curious about Anne of Green Gables. I don’t know much about the story, but I have a feeling I would love this novel ♥ I do plan to read The Dark Artifices after I finish my reread of The Mortal Instruments and read Tales from Shadowhunter Academy. I was planning to finish this reread this year, but I stopped with City of Glass. Fingers crossed for 2020!
I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on these books Caitlin, that was such an interesting way to pick books!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Me neither, haha! I want to really badly though ❤ ❤ I have a feeling that I'll love the novel and the TV show! So many people rave about them, and I must know what the hype is about.
Good luck with your rereads! God knows that the Shadowhunter Chronicles are long, but I'm excited to read its entirety.
Thank you!! I hope you're able to meet all of your reading goals for 2020 ❤

  6. I absolutely loved TBWSH and yes you should read it soon! I mean I could say the same for TDA, and The Nevernight Chronicles easily… I have mixed feelings about TMI but I absolutely love TID and TDA (am actually currently reading Ghosts of the Shadow Market), the short story collections are great too! I’m really excited for Chain of Gold. As for Nevernight… It just might be one of my favourite fantasies ever? I hope you make a sizeable dent in your TBR soon 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I hope I can! It’s one of those books that’s at the top of my TBR, but somehow it gets overtaken by other books that are more pressing for me to read. :/
Rereading the entire Shadowhunter Chronicles will be a feat, but I’m so excited to finally get caught up! Good luck with reading them, and I hope you enjoy them<3
Ahh, I hope that Nevernight becomes a fave of mine as well. I've heard such mixed things, and I genuinely don't know how I'll feel about it.
Thank you! I hope you do too 🙂

  7. I still haven’t read Vengeful as well and I’m lowkey worried that I won’t love it as much as Vicious 😱 It’s always a bit risky when a book has been meant as a standalone and then gets expanded into a Series … but like, I also want all the Victor Vale content 😂 And you’re not the only person who hasn’t read Lady Midnight, it has been sitting on my shelf for years … so I might have to read it sometime soon 😄

    Liked by 1 person

    1. same!! especially bc V.E. Schwab disappointed me with a sequel in the past :(( Yeah, I usually don’t like it when authors write unexpected sequels, but so far, I’ve heard good things about Vengeful, so I’m cautiously optimistic. At the very least, I’ll be reunited with my loves, Victor, Sydney, and Mitch!
I hope we can both read it some time soon!

  8. Thank you so much for the tag (: I should get it done fairly soon and the timing for it is perfect. My TBR definitely seems never ending and I keep stop starting with reading which really isn’t helping 😦 so I’m seriously hoping to read more next year too. And, like you, I really want to re-read all of Cassandra Clare’s books. I wanted to refresh my memories of Lady Midnight & Lord Of Shadows before reading the finale and re-read The Infernal Devices before Chain Of Gold comes out. I also really wanted to remind myself of the events from the original series before picking up Red Scrolls so I figured I may as well just read & re-read everything :L so fingers crossed that we can both do it! Nevernight’s also on my immediate TBR as well as pretty much everything by V.E. Schwab :L
Good luck with getting all of these books read next year (: I’m sure you can do it! Hopefully you’ll end up loving them all too.

    1. Hehe, you’re welcome. can’t wait for your answers if you do it! I hope you’re able to meet all your reading goals for next year! ahh, cassie clare’s books are so thick—good luck to both of us!
Ahh, you should really try V.E. schwab! she’s popular for a reason. i mean, her style isn’t for everyone, but it definitely works for MOST. and I really want to read Nevernight because I genuinely have no clue whether I’ll love it or hate it!
Thank you so much, Charlotte! you’re so sweet 🙂 And likewise ❤

      1. Thank you (: I loved answering these questions. And I hope that we both manage to meet our reading goals for next year. That’s very true 😅 I’m sure we can manage it though.
I definitely intend to, everything by her sounds so, so amazing. Plus I own several as ebooks. So I’ll definitely be picking some of them up soon. And I think I’ll love it, hopefully. I hope that you end up loving it as well.
        Thank you ❤️

  9. Me being me, I obviously prioritized watching Anne with an E over studying, and now I’m obsessed!! ❤ I've watched everything and I'm really interested in the book, even though it's gonna be really different from the show (and I want that specific edition as well, it's too pretty – I own Little Women like that and it's probably the prettiest cover I own).
I also wanna get more in the shadowhunter universe. I adore the world and I've read all the books in the mortal instruments series, the infernal devices trilogy, lady midnight and some extra books. But because Cassandra Clare writes so many books and so fast, I feel I'm always behind, so I definitely wanna catch up on what I haven't read yet. I hope you enjoy your re-reading 😀

    1. HAHA, ME. I’m sure it was worth it though! I can’t wait to watch it! I’ve seen Shirbert scenes all around the Internet, and I’m DYING to watch them with context!
Ahhh, I’m so lucky to have the beautiful Puffin in Bloom edition! I bought it AGES ago, and my mom is wondering why I still haven’t read it, because she paid for it :”) I rlly do want to read the book because I’ve heard such amazing things though!
omg, you’ve read that far into it, and you still feel like you’re behind? ahh, there’s no hope for me then :(( but good luck to you on catching up!!
thank you! I hope you enjoy your current and future reads ❤

      1. I can relate! A friend offered me Little Women like,, three or four years ago? I only picked it up this year and then had to stop reading because I had to move out and I didn’t want to bring such a pretty book with me, I was scared of damaging it!
Yess, there’s tons of hope for you!! I just get so easily distracted xD And I wish she’d stop writing for a couple of years for me to catch up hahaha
What are you even doing, go watch Anne with an E! 😛

        Liked by 1 person

      2. I think I tried to read Little Women once as a wee young child, and it went way over my head 😂 it’s another one of the only classics I have an interest in, though! Maybe I’ll read it, even though I kinda know about some major events that happen in it!
Me too! That’s exactly how I feel :(( Like, I know she needs to make her money and all, but c’mon! i need to catch up!
I REALLY SHOULD 😭😭 i’m just so busy all the time, i can’t

  10. Yay, I’m so happy you did this, because it’s such a fun tag and of course I love reading any post from you!! Thank you for the kind words as well.😭💓

I still haven’t read The Boy Who Steals Houses either!! Wait, who even am I. I guess at least we can feel sad about not reading this book together… what’s even more sad is that I loved A Thousand Perfect Notes and have heard so many trustworthy good reviews of it and yet still haven’t picked it up.

Anne of Green Gables is one of my all-time favorite books, so I’m completely and totally biased in saying that I think you would love it!! Agh, it’s so cute. I also liked Anne With An E, though I’ve only watched the first season. If you do watch it before reading the book, I feel like I should tell you that the show is like…way darker than the book?? Not necessarily in a bad way, just that the book is much more light and happy and the show certainly doesn’t follow the plot of the book exactly. (Also, yes, the guy who plays Gilbert is so cute, I vividly remember that even though I watched the first season two years ago.)

Happiest of reading for the rest of the month and in the new year, Caitlin!!

    1. Thank you so much, Olivia!! 😭😭💖💖 And yeah, it’s such a fun tag to do & I don’t know why it took me so long to get to!

Ah, I haven’t read ATPN yet :(( Both of Cait’s books sound super super good, & I really hope to get to them soon!

Ah, don’t worry—I think I’ll love it too 💛 ohh, thank you so much for telling me that. I want to read the book before watching the tv show, & I see why it could be jarring for me. I’ll definitely keep that in mind! I researched him & his name is Lucas Jade Zumann is something like that?? Idk if this is just me being rude, but as an actor, I don’t find him that attractive. But when he plays Gilbert, it’s a different story 😅

Likewise, Olivia 💓 I hope you get to read all of the books you plan to & that none of them disappoint!

  11. This is such a great tag, thank you so much for thinking of me! I’ve heard so many great things about The Boy Who Steals Houses, I need to get to it next year, hopefully, it sounds so good 😀 And the Shadow of the Wind! I’ve read this book ages ago and really loved it! 🙂

    1. ahh, can’t wait to see your answers if you do it ❤ it does!! literally everyone i know raves about it, and i can't wait to see what the hype surrounding cait is about ❤ and i'm so glad! that gives me more incentive to read the shadow of the wind!

  12. This is such a fun tag! I’m soo excited to see your opinions on TSC! I love it with my entire heart despite its (numerous) flaws and love seeing others reactions to it. Also, I feel like there are so many classics that I like the sound of but have never actually read. Little Women pops into my mind, as does The Secret History. (Is The Secret History a classic? We’re going to pretend like it is even if it’s not). I have never really looked into A Picture of Dorian Grey, but I feel like everyone loves it. Maybe I’ll get to it eventually, maybe.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I’m so excited as well, even though reading the series will take so much of my time 😭
I only want to read… three classics, and that’s not an exaggeration—I don’t like classics. Little Women sounds fine, but it’s not on my TBR. And I think the secret history is considered a modern classic!
Yes, everyone I’ve seen read it loves it, even the ones that hate/don’t pick up classics! (I’ve also heard that Dorian gray is gay, so that’s also why I want to read it)
