Don’t mind me, just crying about the state of my never-ending TBR
instead of actually reading.
As the new year dawns on us, I truly do hope to make a sizable dent in my to-be-read pile. I know that almost everyone says that at the beginning of the year, only to add even more books to their TBR, but in 2020, I’m trying to be serious about cutting my TBR down. And to hold myself accountable, I’m gonna be mentioning seven books that I absolutely, absolutely have to read in 2020. If I don’t get to them next year, feel free to punch me through your screen.
I’ll also be using the prompts of the I Should Read That book tag to help me decide which books to put in this ultimate 2020 TBR. Thank you so much to Olivia @ Purely Olivia and Emme @ A Literary Latte for tagging me! Olivia and Emme are some of my all time favorite book bloggers, and you should really give them some love. 💚

A book that a certain friend is always telling you to read
I’ve recently discovered Ruby @ Ruby Rae Reads, and since then I’ve fallen in love with her amazing personality. Her comments never fail to make me smile. Since she loves The Boy Who Steals Houses a lot, she mentions it in almost all of her posts, and every time, I comment saying that TBWSH is on my TBR. I’ve heard amazing things about it. Plus, its author is Cait from Paper Fury, one of the most iconic people in the book community—I desperately want to support her and her book!
A book that’s been on your TBR forever and yet you still haven’t read it
You mean…. every book on my TBR? If you scroll down to the very bottom of my ebook library, which contains the majority of my TBR, you’ll find that the very first book I ever downloaded is The Shadow of the Wind. Apparently it’s a literary masterpiece, and I’m excited to finally read it and see for myself if it really is.
A book in a series you’ve started, but haven’t gotten around to finishing
I do have valid reasons for not picking Vengeful up yet. First, I’ve been disappointed by a V.E. Schwab sequel in the past. Our Dark Duet? We don’t know her. Second, I’m extremely satisfied with the way Vicious ended already. And third, there may be a third book in this series, and I don’t want to read Vengeful early, only to forget everything that happened in it if/when the third book comes out. That being said, I absolutely adore Vicious and V.E. Schwab’s writing, and I hope to read Vengeful sooner rather than later! I’ve heard great things about it as well!
A classic you’ve always liked the sound of, but have never actually read
There is no better answer to this prompt than The Picture of Dorian Gray. I am so excited to read it because people I trust (even the ones that don’t normally read/enjoy classics) absolutely love it. Plus, its premise sounds amazing.
A popular book that it seems everyone but you has read
Without a doubt, the answer to this is The Dark Artifices series by Cassandra Clare, most notably its first book, Lady Midnight. The Shadowhunter Chronicles is probably one of the top five most talked about books in the book community, and I always feel a little left out whenever people have discussions about it online.
I’ve read the first four books in The Mortal Instruments and the entire The Infernal Devices trilogy, but I don’t remember anything about them because I read them years ago. One of my biggest 2020 goals is to restart the entire Shadowhunter Chronicles by rereading City of Bones, and then read the rest of the books in publication order until I’m finally caught up with TSC. I’m even gonna read the numerous novellas that Cassie Clare has written, I can’t wait.
A book that inspired a film/TV adaptation that you really love, but just haven’t picked up yet
Okay, I haven’t seen Anne With An E YET. But with the show’s cancellation (RIP)—or maybe the premiere of its finale?—my Twitter feed received an influx of Anne With An E-related tweets, photos, and videos.
The actor who plays Gilbert is SO CUTE, I cannot. Seeing those made me super excited to watch the show, and also to finally read the book it’s based on.
A book you see all over Instagram but haven’t picked up yet
Sadly, I don’t have Bookstagram, so I answered this prompt with a popular book that also has a beautiful cover instead!
All editions of Nevernight are absolutely breathtaking. If I had a copy and a Bookstagram account, I’d be taking pictures of it non-stop. I’ve also heard the most incredible things about Nevernight! Granted, I’ve heard negative things as well, but I feel like those who love the Nevernight Chronicles die-hard love it, and I’m excited to see where I fall on the spectrum.
I like to think that I’m good at sticking to deadlines, so I better read all of these books by the end of next year. A part of my soul will die if I don’t.
do you cry once a week about the state of your tbr like i do? what books do you absolutely have to read already? have you read any of the books i mentioned here?
